burning the candle at both ends - Candlewasters

It appears in a lot of confusing places on this site, so I’m going to fill you in. What is Candlewasters?

Candlewasters is a new writing night, organised by the Edinburgh University Theatre Company, and is performed in their home, Bedlam Theatre.

In 2014-15, I was lucky enough to co-run it, with my fellow curator Joe Christie. It was our job, to receive the submitted scripts, choose the ones for performance, assign directors to the scripts and cast them. We also instituted for the first time a repertory of actors and directors to take the scripts and turn them into plays.

Over a course of the year we had 4 productions.

I was also in charge of the tech for all of the performance. You can see some photos of the shows in the tech gallery.

Alongside the performance and script submissions, we also ran a workshop series to accompany it. Work in Progress was a place for budding writers to get their pieces of work shared to the group, getting them read together, and allowing a space to share feedback. Or to simply talk though ideas that had not made it to page yet.

After finishing my year, I was invited back to run a Directing Workshop for Candlewasters, focusing on The Show Team.

I was lucky enough to take part in Candlewasters as a writer. They accepted two of my peices:

Ghost Story

An unlikely friendship is stuck up between a teacher who has recently moved to the country, and the ghost that already lives there.

Forgotten & Nameless

An extract from Myth Remembered. Telling the story of the Irish goddess The Morrigan, and how she persisted though constant attempts to sanitize, Christianize, or destroy her.
